5 A Model of Cooperation: Networks and Social Structure

Introduction

This chapter provides a worm's eye view of networks themselves, how they are organized and what contributes to the success of individual networks. The case study data from the networks described in the previous two chapters is assessed to develop a model of the organizational characteristics of swine producer networks.

All of the networks studied reflect four key organizational characteristics:

1. operational goals of the network itself - what function does the network serve for its members?

2. level of organizational complexity of the network - how does the network go about fulfilling its function?

3. characteristics of member farms - what kinds of farm operations are linked together by a particular network?

4. role of the network organizer and the flow of information within the network - who organizes and coordinates the activities of the members?

These four categories provide a common descriptive frame for all of the networks I studied. Below I explore the importance of these aspects of the networks. I then explain the success or failure of networks in terms of these categories.
